The North East Development Commission (NEDC) has assured of quick reconstruction of a major bridge in Adamawa State destroyed by erosion.

The bridge, a major passageway in Madagali, a town in the northern part of the state which links Adamawa with Borno State, collapsed last Thursday, after which goods can only be taken across now by placing it on the head and walking through the river.

The NEDC management, inspecting the collapsed bridge on Sunday, stressed that efforts to reconstruct it would be hastened.

Managing Director of the NEDC, Alhaji Mohammed Alkali, said President Bola Tinubu had already directed his commission to reconstruct the bridge, adding that they would be acting on it.

He said that while the reconstruction process gets underway, a temporary passage would be created to ease the current burden of people having to empty vehicles on either side of the bridge and carry goods on the head to cross the flowing river.

LEADERSHIP observed that unless such temporary passage is provided, any major rain in the next few days would produce such a volume of water that would make it impossible for anyone to cross the river, thereby completely cutting off Northern Adamawa from Southern Borno.

The people of Madagali and others with whom they transact business or social interaction are suffering due to the collapsed bridge.

A Madagali resident, Mathew Maziga, said his people and those of Goza LGA in Borno State who are directly affected need the NEDC to work according to its promise and quickly reconstruct the bridge.
