Ohanaeze Youths Call For Unity, Respect Amidst Political Debate

The Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Council Worldwide, a prominent Igbo socio-cultural group, has addressed the recent criticisms aimed at the House of Representatives Deputy Speaker, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Kalu, following his statement about the All Progressives Congress (APC) potentially taking over Abia State in 2027.

Kalu’s remarks, made during a media appearance, where he expressed confidence that Abia State would not remain in opposition, have stirred reactions, particularly from members of the Labour Party, the political platform of Governor Alex Otti.

In a statement released yesterday, the National President of the Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Council, Mazi Okwu Nnabuike, expressed concern over the backlash against Kalu, deeming it unnecessary.

He emphasized that Kalu’s comments were not intended to undermine the office of the governor but were rather an invitation for Governor Otti to rejoin the APC, a party he once belonged to.

“We have carefully reviewed the statements made by Hon. Kalu and found no disparaging remarks against Governor Otti or his office. His invitation to Otti to return to the APC was made in the spirit of political discourse and should not be seen as an affront,” Okwu said.

Okwu further pointed out that Kalu has a longstanding relationship with Governor Otti, noting that they communicate frequently and share mutual respect.

He questioned the need for any controversy over what he described as a friendly and harmless suggestion.

“It is entirely up to Governor Otti to decide whether to accept Kalu’s invitation or to continue his journey with the Labour Party,” Okwu added.

He also highlighted the importance of respecting leadership and fostering unity among the Igbo people, urging them to move away from divisive tendencies.

Okwu commended Kalu’s efforts in advocating for the South East, particularly his role in promoting the South East Development Commission, and called for the Deputy Speaker to be accorded the respect he deserves.

“Rt. Hon. Benjamin Kalu is currently the highest-ranking Igbo personality in the federal government, and his contributions should be acknowledged and respected. Any criticism of him should be constructive and not intended to undermine his efforts,” Okwu concluded.
