The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has disowned a fake ‘notification’ circulating online about planned nationwide protests on September 15, 2024, in response to the recent hike in fuel prices.

NANS national president, Comrade Lucky Emonefe, in an interview with LEADERSHIP, said contrary to widespread speculation and misinformation, there was no organised demonstration scheduled by the student body.

He described the notification as “fake”, saying it did not emanate from his office.

Also speaking, Comrade Gundu Mimidoo Joy, the Public Relations Officer of NANS, said the notification of a planned nationwide protest to shut down major cities across the country, did not come from its office but authored by those with their personal interest.

LEADERSHIP reports that a notification signed by Okunomo Henry Adewumi, who claimed to be NANS Senate president, had said the student body was planning a shutdown of all major cities in Nigeria, set to begin on September 15, 2024.

The purported protest, according to Adewumi, was in reaction to the recent increase in fuel pump prices and what the students described as the incompetence of Mele Kyari, the group chief executive officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC).
