The Sokoto State government has responded to a viral video in which the leader of Human Rights Organizations for Africa, Dr. Suleiman Shuaibu Shinkafi, threatened to drag the state government before the International Criminal Court (ICC) over the recent murder of Sarkin Gobir Gatawa, Alhaji Isa Muhammad Bawa, by bandits.

In a statement signed by Colonel Ahmed Abdul Usman (rtd), the Special Adviser on Security Matters to Governor Ahmed Aliyu, the State government expressed disappointment at Dr. Shinkafi’s threat, noting that it came at a time when the entire nation was still mourning the tragic loss of the monarch.

Colonel Usman (rtd) clarified that Sokoto State does not have a Ministry of Security or a Commissioner for Security, but rather a Special Adviser on Security Matters. He, therefore, criticised Dr. Shinkafi for not verifying this fact and for failing to acknowledge the extensive efforts by the state government to ensure security of lives in the State.

According to the statement, the Sokoto State government has provided 70 brand new operational vehicles and 700 motorcycles to security agencies and vigilante groups, alongside regular logistics support.

“The government also conducts regular security meetings and has established the Sokoto State Community Guards Corps to support conventional security forces,” he stated.

The statement further noted that the bandits responsible for the terror attacks in the State were largely based in neighbouring Zamfara State, including those involved in the abduction and murder of Sarkin Gobir. It highlighted the efforts made by the state government to secure the release of the slain monarch, which were acknowledged by the son of the deceased, Nasir Isa Bawa, in a viral video.

The Security Adviser called on Dr. Shinkafi and other human rights organisations to redirect their energies towards addressing the root causes of banditry and supporting state efforts rather than pursuing legal actions against the government.

The statement concluded by assuring the public that the Sokoto State government will continue to prioritise the security and safety of its citizens.
