Science Students Demand Action On Price Hikes

The Nigerian Association of Science Students (NASS) has urged the Federal Government to address the alarming rise in the prices of goods, petrol, and cooking gas, calling for immediate intervention to alleviate the economic burden on citizens.

NASS, under the leadership of Comr. Henry Enyinstede, issued a press statement saying that despite the recent nationwide protest against bad governance, hardship has intensified following the implementation of the new minimum wage.

According to him, the price of premium motor spirit, known as petrol, is currently selling for one thousand three hundred naira and above in a country where crude oil is a natural resource. He said this has affected all other commodities in the country.

“On behalf of the Nigerian Association of Science Students (NASS) and all Nigerian students, we call on the Nigeria Labour Congress and trade unions to pay decisive attention to the current state of the nation.

“Nigerian students are heartbroken and do not want to see further collapse in the educational sector. We are dissatisfied with the government’s approach to tackling the hike in electricity tariffs, foodstuffs, and the current price of petrol, which has led to an increase in the price of cooking gas. Students are finding it difficult to cope, despite the pressures from lecturers and their own frustrations.

“We, the Nigerian Association of Science Students, are calling on the Federal Government to take immediate action to curb the unhealthy increase in the prices of goods, petrol, and cooking gas. Families are struggling, and if this situation persists, Nigerians may have no choice but to return to the streets and protest against poor governance. When pushed too far, people have no choice but to fight back.”

He urged every Nigerian to give President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration time to address the longstanding problems of the country, though it seems that things are worsening. He sincerely hopes that Nigeria will improve if the right measures are implemented.

“In the same vein, we are notifying all members and the general public that the association will continue to voice our concerns to ensure that the best interests of the country are served and enjoyed by all Nigerians. We do not wish for another nationwide protest, but we plead for a radical approach to eradicate and alleviate the current hardships,” he added.
