#EndBadGovernance Protest: Kano JCI Lists Terms Of Reference

The Judicial Commission Of Inquiry (JCI), Investigating cases of breach of peace, wanton destruction of public and private property, looting, arson and killings that took place in Kano during the nationwide protest has spelt out its terms of reference.

Addressing newsmen in its maiden press conference on Thursday in Kano, the chairman of the commission, retired Justice Lawan Mahmood, also fixed the period within which it will conclude its work as three months from the date of its inauguration.

The seven terms of reference include establishing the remote and immediate causes of the first week of August 2024 breach of peace, wanton destruction of public and private property, looting, arson and killings in Kano.

“Identify individuals, group of persons and or Institutions directly or indirectly responsible for the unrest and their roles in precipitating the unrest and make appropriate recommendations;

“Ascertain the extent of damage to properties, loss of lives and valuables and make appropriate recommendations; Recommend ways of avoiding a recurrence of such happenings in the future; Make any other recommendations incidental to the Commission’s assignment and its Terms of Reference; In Carrying out its functions, the Commission is to be guided by the Provisions of section 8 of the Kano State Commission of Inquiry Law Cap 26, Laws of Kano State of Nigeria 2018” he stated.

The Commission further appealed to the general public to be bold enough to support it with relevant evidence and facts that will assist towards preparing it’s report, including far reaching recommendations that will aid and forestall the reoccurrence of such incidents in future.

It reiterated its pledge to be fair in conducting its assignment while appreciating governor Abba Yusuf for allowing it to do what was necessary without interference from any quarters.
