Chairman of the convention, Comrade Ogo Otekevwe told journalists at a briefing that the elections was conducted under a free-rancour environment devoid of opposition.

According to him Umar polled a total vote of 202 out of 310 delegate’s votes to defeat other contestants.

Speaking to journalists, the new president described his victory as a new dawn for Nigerian students.

On the way forward for Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) strike, Comrade Faruq promised to meet with the minister of education, Mallam Adamu Adamu and the leadership of ASUU and work relentlessly to ensure that students are back on campus in no distance time.

He said, “I want to use this opportunity to let the public know that NANS has a new president, I am Comrade Umar Faruq Lawal, a student of Bayaro University, Kano, i am the newly elect president of NANS today, i want to use this privilege to appreciate all Nigerian students that support me and deem it fit to ensure that they elect a new leadership.

I want to appreciate the outgoing leadership of Comrade Sunday Asefon and Chucks Okafor, the CPC chairman and other members of convention planning committee to ensure that all the delegates from 36 states converge in Abuja to elect me as president of NANS, it is a new dawn for NANS as it will grow higher”.

“I want to assure Nigerian students that in no distance time, i will work to make sure that the leadership of ASUU will meet with the federal government to make sure that Nigerian students go back to campus.

NANS has new president and we are coming soon to discuss with the leadership of ASUU so that we can come to a roundtable to make sure they call off this long strike. We will make sure we protect our students at all levels because that is the first priority of my leadership,” he added.
