The Federal Government on Friday, kick-started the dredging of the downstream section of Ogun River as part of the measures to create a more discharge path for excess water releases from the Oyan Dam towards preventing flooding on communities in Ogun and Lagos States.

Official flag-off of the 10-km dredging project and handing over of the site to the contracting firm, Lanum Integrated Services Ltd held at the Ikorodu – Isheri stretch of the Ogun River was also said to be part of the proactive measures of the Ogun Osun River Basin Development Authority (OORBDA) towards averting replication of the flooding incident recently experienced in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital attributed to failed Alau Dam in that state.

Speaking at the flag-off ceremony held at Itowolo Ikorodu riverine community, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Ogun-Osun River Basin Development Authority, Engr. Deji Ashiru said the project is of a paramount importance to the federal government considering the safety and well-being of communities along this stretch of the river.

Ashiru explained that the dredging project, which has a six-months implementation period, principally aimed at improving water flow from the Ikorodu – Isheri section of the Ogun River into the Lagoon, thereby, “reducing flood risks by dredging this 10km stretch to create a more efficient discharge path for excess water”.

“This contract represents a significant step forward in solving flooding challenges. We are committed to safeguarding lives and properties, and this dredging project is just one example of the many interventions being implemented to protect our communities from floods.

“The downstream section of the Ogun River is influenced by a complex network of 52 river tributaries, which contribute to rising water levels. The Oyan Dam plays a crucial role in erosion control, mitigating the damaging effects of uncontrolled water flows.

“However, recent flood patterns, including the catastrophic flooding in Borno State due to a failed dam, highlight the need for proactive measures. We must prepare for potential water into the Oyan Dam, given predictions of large volumes of runoff in the coming months.

“To this, the federal government, through the Ogun – Oshun River Basin Development Authority (OORBDA) has taken preemptive measures. Since March, 2024, we have been gradually releasing water from Oyan Dam in a controlled manner, increasing the dam’s capacity to accommodate excess floodwater.

“You are aware of what is currently happening in Borno State, where lives have been lost and properties worth several millions of Naira were destroyed, definitely, when you have flood and erosion control, what it means that properties are safe and lives of the people are secured and consequently, the economy will improve for better”.
