Institute Charges Govt On Retirees’ Plight

National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS) has urged the federal government to formulate a comprehensive policy to address the challenges being faced by senior civil servants after retirement.
The deputy monitor-general of Senior Executive Course (SEC) 42, Amina Yusuf, made the call during the SEC 42 2020 reunion conference in Abuja yesterday.

Yusuf while speaking with journalists stressed the need for a government-backed initiative, potentially a ministry, to address the financial, emotional and social challenges that retirees encounter.

“Life after retirement is a real concern, because many civil servants find it difficult to save for the future due to the current economic climate.

“With the kind of economy we are in now, it is hard to survive on salary, let alone save for retirement or start a business. Civil servants have little time to plan for life after their working years,” she said.

She further pointed out the struggles retirees face, including depression, loneliness and financial difficulties, calling it a serious problem that needs urgent attention.

“While youths complain about unemployment, retirees face a range of challenges, from lack of finances to isolation,” she said.

The general monitor of NIPSS SEC 42, Air Commodore Caleb Olayera, expressed satisfaction with the reunion, saying it strengthens bonds among members.

“This reunion is a way to ensure that our members remain connected and well-prepared for retirement,” he said.

Olayera said SEC 42 members were committed to giving back to society, emphasising that the initiative was part of effort to foster a better society under the Alumni Association of the National Institute.

National Welfare Officer of SEC 42, Mrs. Favour Ugwuanyi, advised young civil servants to approach their careers with caution.

“Be wise and diplomatic in your actions. You might make enemies while in service, which could lead to regrets after retirement,” she warned.

Highpoint of the reunion was a visit to an orphanage home, Abuja Children’s Home at Karu in the FCT by members of SEC 42 where N500,000 was donated to support less privileged children.
