A nursing mother, her baby and three others have lost their lives in an auto-crash in Anambra State. The incident which involved a Lexus RX330 brand of Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) and a truck occurred at about 7.30pm on Sunday night at Enugwu-Agidi area, Njikoka local government area of Anambra State along the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway.
The two vehicles had a head-on collision on one side of the dual expressway because one of the lanes was impassable to motorists due to its bad condition, so all vehicles were plying the same lane on the expressway.
When contacted, the sector commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Anambra State, Mr Adeoye Irelewuyi who confirmed the incident blamed it on over-speeding and loss of control of his vehicle by the truck driver.
Expressing sympathy with families of the deceased, the state FRSC boss warned motorists, especially, truck drivers to avoid speeding and to ensure that they kept to recommended speed limit at all times.
Irelewuyi who reacted yesterday said, “An Unidentified driver of a black Lexus RX330 with registration number KJA182HS and an unidentified driver of a Red Truck with no registration number were involved in a fatal road traffic crash at Enugwu-Agidi by Awka-Enugu Expressway today 4th September, 2022 at about 1920hrs.
“The probable cause of the fatal crash was excessive speed,” he said.
He said, “Five people (3 male adults, 1 female adult and 1 female child) were involved in the crash”.
He stated that FRSC rescue team from RS5.3 of the command took the victims of the auto-crash to Amaku General Hospital, Awka where they were confirmed dead by the doctor on duty, and the corpses deposited at the hospital morgue.
He stated that the rescue team had already deployed proper mechanism and had removed the crashed vehicles and ensured free traffic flow, and advised motorists “Kill the speed before it kills you. Drive to arrive alive. Let’s keep our road safe from crash.”
