Experts have emphasised the need for a well-defined financing model and increased mechanisation to ensure food security in Nigeria and across Africa. The call was made during the recently concluded Africa Food System Forum in Kigali, Rwanda.

A significant highlight of the forum was the launch of the Mechanisation Coalition, which underscores the pivotal role mechanisation plays in transforming Africa’s agricultural landscape.

According to a statement by the Alliance for Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA), Rufus Idris, the organisation envisions a future where mechanised farming relieves the burden of labour-intensive agriculture, empowering farmers to enhance productivity. He stated, “Mechanisation touches every stage of the agricultural value chain, from preparing the soil to bringing the harvest to market. Financing and inclusivity are crucial, particularly the involvement of youth and women in this agricultural revolution.”

Professor Hamadi Boga, AGRA’s Vice President of Programme Delivery, underscored the need for public-private partnerships to create a unified financing platform that delivers sustainable solutions, ultimately improving farmers’ livelihoods.

Similarly, George Malechela, Head of Digital Systems and Solutions for Agriculture at AGRA, highlighted the financial barriers smallholder farmers face in accessing mechanisation. He called for government support through policies and tax incentives to ensure that the benefits of mechanisation reach the farmers who need it most.
