Senate President Godswill Akpabio called for solidarity on Tuesday. He urged senators to come together to tackle Nigeria’s pressing economic and security challenges. His remarks came during a welcome address at the Senate’s resumption following a two-month annual recess.

Akpabio emphasised the crucial role of the Legislature, stating that while the Judiciary serves as a final refuge for citizens, it is the Legislature that provides the first ray of hope. He articulated that if legislators can effectively manage the nation’s challenges, the Executive can operate more smoothly, and the Judiciary can uphold the people’s collective will.

“As we reconvene in this esteemed chamber, our work for the people of Nigeria is more vital than ever. Our responsibilities as legislators extend beyond mere words; we must act decisively,”he stated. “The recent break allowed us to reconnect with our constituents and instill hope for a brighter future. We have encountered notable developments in the last few months requiring immediate attention and decisive action.“

Expressing concern over the dire economic situation, Akpabio affirmed the National Assembly’s responsibility to address these issues with urgency and empathy. “Nigerians are facing severe inflation and rising living costs, testing the very fabric of our society. We stand in solidarity with every citizen enduring these hardships, and it is our sacred duty to respond compassionately,” he said.

Despite the economic difficulties, Akpabio acknowledged the significant progress made in various sectors under President Bola Tinubu’s leadership. “Amidst these challenges, we have witnessed positive developments in agriculture and infrastructure that promise a better future. However, we must not lose sight of the pressing issues that demand our attention, particularly the security of our citizens.”

He urged lawmakers to prioritize safety, ensuring that all Nigerians can move freely without fear. “The recent rise in insecurity is a call to action for us to strengthen our laws and take decisive steps to protect our communities,” he added.

As the new legislative session began, Akpabio expressed gratitude for the senators’ dedication and urged them to continue embodying the spirit of patriotism. “We are the voice of the people, tasked with advocating for their rights and improving their lives. The challenges we face are significant, but we must confront them with determination.

We cannot retreat in our mission to uplift the lives of Nigerians.”

He emphasised the importance of collaboration with the Executive branch, stating that democracy and good governance should translate into tangible benefits for the citizens. “We must strive for policies that promote economic stability, enhance security, and foster social justice. It is essential to meet public skepticism with determination and a clear vision for change.”

Akpabio called for transparency and accountability, urging senators to engage with their constituents and ensure their voices are heard within the legislative process. “Let us be heralds of change, proclaiming that every citizen’s aspirations are attainable,” he remarked.

Akpabio encouraged senators to approach the upcoming session with renewed energy and resolve, reminding them of their role as champions for their communities. “Together, we can illuminate the path toward a more prosperous Nigeria. Let us inspire hope and demonstrate that change is possible.”
