The Acting Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, has promised to ensure that petitions are dealt with speedily to promote integrity within the judiciary.
Kekere-Ekun made this vow during her appearance before the Senate on Wednesday for screening and confirmation as the substantive CJN.
The 1974 Queens College alumnus and a Life Bencher pledged to do her best in upholding the integrity of the judiciary, and the rule of law as well defend the Constitution of Nigeria.
“I am known for integrity and discipline. I will ensure zero tolerance for corruption,” she assured.
Justice Kekere-Ekun added that, “There is a need to insulate the judiciary, push for better welfare for judicial officers to ensure they perform at their optimal. Appointment of Judicial officers will also be stringently done.”
The Acting CJN also called for improvement in the laws to enhance the nation’s independence while underscoring the restriction in the number of cases presented to the Supreme Court.
She suggested that all pre-election cases should terminate at the Court of Appeal, adding that there is a need to strengthen attitude during elections to eliminate the need to always head for court.
Kekere-Ekun, reacting to the abuse of ex parte orders, asserted that any officer found culpable would be dealt with decisively, adding that the same will apply where there are indiscriminate grants of interim injunctions.
She also warned that there will be a tightening of the existing disciplinary procedures within the judiciary.
The CJN’s screening followed the letter to the Senate by President Bola Tinubu on Tuesday requesting the confirmation of Justice Kekere-Ekun as the substantive CJN.
The Acting CJN was accompanied to the Senate chambers by other Supreme Court judges, judicial officers, and senior assistants to the president on National Assembly matters.
