Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu stressed the need for Nigerians to be resilient in the face of daunting challenges rocking the country.

The governor stated this while addressing attendees at the 64th National Independence Day Celebration at the State House in Marina. He acknowledged the widespread discontent.

He stated, “The challenges we face seem endless: insecurity, economic hardship, and distrust in leadership. These are not mere statistics; they are the lived experiences of Lagosians.”

Sanwo-Olu emphasised the resilience and creativity of Lagosians, saying, “We are a state of over 20 million dreams, a melting pot of cultures and aspirations. When the world looks at Lagos, it sees Nigeria’s brightest hope and most vibrant energy. Despite the challenges, I confidently say that together we can build Lagos and Nigeria to fulfil every citizen’s dreams.”

While urging Nigerians not to lose faith amid difficulties, he acknowledged the uncertain road ahead, saying, “We can choose despair or believe in our power to create change. I choose to believe in us, the people of Lagos.”

He reiterated Lagos’s role as a trailblazer in innovation and culture, pledging to ensure the state remains a beacon of hope for Nigeria and Africa.

“But I cannot do this alone. No government can. We need your trust, which must be earned through action, not words. My administration will prioritise transparency and strengthen communication with you,” he added.

In what observers described as a radical departure from traditional celebrations, the Lagos State Government opted for a more subdued observance of this year’s Independence Day.

This decision comes amid ongoing protests and civil unrest, as citizens voice their frustrations over governance, economic struggles, and security issues.
