The International Human Rights Commission (IHRC) is set to mark a significant milestone in its Nigerian operations with the upcoming visit of its Secretary General from Switzerland.

High-profile investments and appointments will highlight the visit, signalling the organisation’s growing influence and commitment to human rights in the country.

At the forefront of these appointments is the elevation of Dr Shehu Malami, who will be formally conferred with the portfolio of Special Adviser to IHRC on inter-governmental affairs and Chairman of the Board of Trustees in Africa.

This new role represents a promotion from his previous position as Ambassador at Large to the African region.

Ambassador Hezekiel Duru, Head of Diplomatic Mission and Ambassador at Large of the IHRC, emphasised the importance of these appointments. “These investments and inductions, including Dr Malami’s elevation, reflect our expanding presence and impact across Nigeria,” Duru stated during a recent interaction at a United Nations of Africa event.

The Secretary General’s visit is expected to include other significant appointments and inductions, although specific details still need to be released.

These actions are part of the IHRC’s strategy to strengthen its operational capacity and effectiveness in addressing human rights issues throughout Nigeria.

Ambassador Duru also highlighted the IHRC’s achievements in Nigeria, including establishing offices across various geopolitical zones, providing scholarships, implementing community development projects such as borehole drilling, and empowerment initiatives for local communities.

The timing of these appointments coincides with the IHRC’s call for increased engagement from Nigerian citizens. “We are open to petitions from Nigerians whose human rights have been abused,” Duru added, noting the positive response from citizens in defending their rights.
