Cholera Kills 13 In Niger

The cholera outbreak in three local government areas of Niger State has resulted in the death of 13 people from January till date.

LEADERSHIP findings revealed that 12 people died in Suleja local government area, one in Katcha, and none yet in Paikoro local government area.

It was learnt that a preliminary epistemological report showed that only three of the 25 local government cholera cases were confirmed in the state as the authorities tried to curtail the spread of the disease.

The permanent secretary of the Ministry of Secondary and Tertiary Health, Dr Muhammad Gana, confirmed the outbreak at Katcha while speaking to journalists.

He noted that the Ministry of Health has dispatched a team of health professionals with commodities to curtail the spread in the affected communities.

The permanent secretary did not give much detail about the suspected cases of Cholera outbreak in Paiko, Paikoro local government area of Niger State as they await epistemological reports.

A source in the village, however, said that at Paiko Modern Clinic there are patients with signs and symptoms of Cholera disease, and they are being treated by a team of medical personnel.

It was learnt that at least four new cases are recorded, and efforts are ongoing to ensure that the further spread of the disease is curtailed.

However, the permanent secretary, Dr Gana, stressed the need for people to take their personal and environmental hygiene important, as cholera is a water and sanitation-borne disease.
