Former Nigerian international Benedict Akwuegbu has disclosed that Super Eagles striker Cyril Dessers will get his chance to impress interim head coach Augustine Eguavoen in the senior national team.
The Rangers star was omitted from the squad that faced Libya in a double header of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
His early season scoring exploits this term haven’t been enough to earn him a call-up for the September and October international windows either.
However, in a chat with Sportsboom.com, Akwuegbu stated that Dessers should show patience and focus on his club career.
“I’m sure Dessers will get his opportunity soon,” he told Sportsboom.com. “I understand how frustrating it can be, but he can’t afford to give up. He must keep working hard, scoring goals for his club, and be ready to seize the moment when it comes.
“There is strong competition for his position, and Nigeria has many options in that area. The coach has to make tough decisions, and unfortunately, it hasn’t worked out in Dessers’ favour. Maybe he doesn’t fit into the current tactical plans.”
