As many public institutions of learning and the average person gradually lose the ability to afford electricity in the country, Federal Government Girls College alumni have opted for solar power as an alternative energy source to power the school’s facilities.
The President of the Old Girls’ Association of Federal Government Girls College Oyo, Prof Ayodele Atsenuwa, disclosed this during a press conference at NUGA Secretariat, UNILAG, Lagos. Atsenuwa said the Old Girls Association had concluded plans to inaugurate several solar-powered electricity projects for its alma mater.
Atsenuwa explained that the projects were parts of activities lined up for the 50th anniversary since the establishment of the school with the theme, ‘Celebrating our legacy of Excellence,’ adding that members would be marking the anniversary with N44 million legacy projects to be commissioned at a special assembly being convened on Saturday, 19th October.
According to her, the projects are solar electricity intervention with the capacity to power 11 blocks of eight classrooms each, the administrative blocks, the school library and solar-powered flood lights in the kitchen area.
Atsenuwa added that the renovated, well-furnished modern School Library has solar-powered boreholes to serve five student hostels, and the Minister of State will commission the kitchen for Education, Alhaji Yusuf Tanko Sununu.
The President further said, “On Saturday 19th October, with the current student’s special gathering of all old girls, current students, current and former staff of the school, representatives of the Parents and Teachers Association, and special guests including the distinguished senator representing Oyo Central Senatorial District and the Honourable Member of the House of Representatives representing the Afijio/Oyo East/Oyo West/Atiba Federal Constituency, Our Guest Speaker at the event is Mr Olasupo Sasore, SAN, the former Hon. Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Lagos State and a FundRaising and Gala Nite.
Prof Atsenuwa stated that the institution, established in 1974, opened its doors to the first students on September 27th, 1974.
“Fifty years on, from a modest first set of about twenty girls who arrived on that first day, FGGC Oyo has received girls more than 6000 girls in 50 cohorts, nurturing them into young adults, who by the time they are leaving the school are well equipped to take on the world because of the quality of rounded education that they have received.”
The Chairman of the event’s Planning Committee, Ayodeji Ikotun, explained that the target fund for the event was N82 million. Still, the committee raised N50 million, saying the country’s economic situation had impacted the fundraising activity.
She appealed to individuals, corporate bodies, and the government to support the school in upholding educational standards.
