Professionals Must Support Good Governance, Says APBN

The outgoing president of the Association of Professional Bodies of Nigeria (APBN), Mr. Manason Rubainu has called for good governance and ethical leadership from both the political class and Nigeria’s professionals.

Mr. Rubainu, who made the call at the 2024 Annual General Assembly of APBN, in Abuja, highlighted the governance crisis in Nigeria, marked by corruption, inefficiency, and weak institutions.

He criticised the political class for prioritising personal ambition over public service, resulting in widespread poverty, insecurity, and underdeveloped infrastructure.

Rubainu called for professionals to hold themselves accountable, stating that “We are not mere spectators; we are architects of society.”

Acknowledging President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s awareness of the nation’s suffering, Rubainu urged transparency in government policies, especially as Nigerians grapple with economic hardships.

He also stressed that professionals across sectors must reject complicity in corruption, calling for a recommitment to ethical standards and integrity.

Rubainu outlined key steps for improving governance, including advocating for policy reforms, promoting ethical practices, mentoring the next generation, and collaborating across professional fields. He emphasised the need for APBN to become more visible and actively contribute to national development.
