The officer, whose identity was yet to be revealed, was leading a team to respond to a fatal accident when the attack occurred.

Confirming the incident, the Lagos State Police spokesperson, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, explained that the officers had been called to the scene of an accident at WEMCO Junction by Mobil Road, where a motorcycle rider had collided with a trailer and died instantly.

“At about 01:40 hours, a distress call was received that a motorcycle rider ran into a trailer at WEMCO Junction, Mobil Road, Pen Cinema, Agege, and died on the spot,” SP Hundeyin said.

In response, a police patrol team was dispatched to the scene to manage the situation. However, upon arrival, they encountered a large gathering of Okada riders. According to Police spokesman, as the officers attempted to evacuate the trailer involved in the accident, the riders became hostile and insisted on torching the vehicle.

The body of the deceased officer has been taken to the Mainland General Hospital Morgue in Yaba for an autopsy.

SP Hundeyin further revealed that five suspects have been arrested in connection with the killing, while a manhunt was underway to apprehend others who fled the scene.
