The Anambra State Government has pledged to track down those responsible for the recent cult-related violence in the Nibo community of Awka South Local Government Area, which took place on Sunday.

The tragic events led to the deaths of at least 13 individuals when a group of suspected cultists attacked a gathering near the location of the community’s New Yam festival, known as the ‘Nibo festival.

Witnesses reported that the assailants arrived in a Lexus 300 jeep, opening fire on festival-goers near Oye Nwochichi Market at Nibo Old Maternity, resulting in the immediate deaths of eight people. They then moved to another area where additional casualties were reported.

In a statement released yesterday, Law Mefor, the Anambra State Commissioner for Information, confirmed the government’s awareness of the incident and announced that efforts to apprehend the culprits had already begun.

Mefor stated, “The Anambra State Government is aware of the tragic deaths linked to alleged cult activities in Nibo, Awka South LG, on Sunday, October 20, 2024. This incident highlights the ongoing issue of violence associated with cults in our region, and the government is committed to eradicating this menace.”

He expressed condolences to the victims’ families, assuring them that the government would thoroughly investigate the incident and bring the offenders to justice.

To assist in this effort, the government is asking the public for any information that could lead to the arrest of those responsible, promising confidentiality and potential rewards for helpful tips.

Mefor also encouraged law-abiding citizens to continue their daily activities without fear, reaffirming that the state government is collaborating with security agencies to address the situation. He mentioned that hotlines for reporting information related to this incident will soon be made available to the public.
