President Bola Tinubu has mourned the passing of Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu, a former minister and elder statesman, describing him as a “perfect gentleman” and a “patriotic Nigerian.”

Dr. Onu, who passed away on April 11, 2024, was celebrated for his pivotal role in shaping the nation’s political landscape and his contributions to Nigeria’s development.

In a statement issued yesterday, President Tinubu reflected on the life and legacy of Dr Onu, praising his commitment to Nigeria’s progress and his instrumental role in forming the All Progressives Congress (APC), which has produced two presidents, including Tinubu himself.

“Dr. Onu was a true progressive and a quintessential politician,” the president noted, adding that Onu’s work in uniting fractious political groups to form the APC ahead of the 2015 election was a critical turning point in the nation’s history.

Tinubu also highlighted Dr. Onu’s achievements as the first civilian governor of Abia State, where he laid the foundation for the state’s development.

As the longest-serving Minister of Science, Technology, and Innovation, Dr. Onu was recognised for his dedication to advancing the nation’s technological sector from 2015 to 2022.

“He was a brilliant administrator and a committed public servant,” Tinubu said, praising Dr Onu’s soft-spoken and welcoming demeanour.

“His absence will be deeply felt by this nation, his family, and the countless individuals who saw him as a true leader and hero.”

President Tinubu expressed gratitude on behalf of a “grateful nation” for Dr. Onu’s service and contributions, and offered prayers for his soul’s peaceful rest, affirming that his legacy would continue to inspire future generations of Nigerians.
