A non-governmental organisation, Building Blocks for Peace Foundation (BBFORPEACE), is spearheading efforts to advance the implementation of Nigeria’s climate policies in Nasarawa State.

As part of its “Climate Action for Stronger Naija” project, the foundation hosted a one-day community dialogue to raise awareness of Nigeria’s national climate strategies.

The Executive Director of BBFORPEACE, Mr Rafiu Lawal, represented by Programme Officer Mr Samson Shabu, highlighted the significance of the dialogue.

He noted that it served as a platform to discuss critical policies, such as the National Adaptation Plan on Climate Change and Nigeria’s Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs).

“BBFORPEACE had previously trained ten youth civil society organisations in Nasarawa State on the importance of these climate policies,” Lawal said.

“The dialogue lays the groundwork for creating a Local Adaptation Plan of Action for Nasarawa State.”

The Emir of Lafia, represented by Mr Aliyu Isa Shuaibu, praised the foundation’s initiative.

“As traditional leaders, we recognise the importance of preserving our environment for future generations,” he stated.

“Our communities are already facing the impacts of climate change, from erosion to droughts and floods. It is our responsibility to act now for the sake of our children.”

The Nasarawa State Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Hon. Yakubu Kwanta, expressed the government’s commitment to climate action.

Speaking through a representative, he emphasised the state’s vulnerability to climate change and outlined focus areas such as sustainable land management, renewable energy, and climate-resilient infrastructure.

“Collaborating with organisations like BBFORPEACE enhances the protection of our natural resources and promotes the environmental and economic growth of Nasarawa State,” Kwanta said.

Mrs Patience Ogeriya, representing the Commissioner for Women and Social Development, highlighted the disproportionate impact of climate change on women and children.
