The Senate, on Tuesday, summoned the chairman of the National Drugs Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Brig-Gen Buba Marwa (rtd), to appear before it regarding allegations made against the Deputy Senate Leader, Senator Oyelola Ashiru (APC, Kwara South) by the anti-narcotic agency.

The resolution of the Senate was sequel to a point of order raised by Senator Ashiru at plenary.

The Senate has consequently constituted a six-member panel to summon all parties connected to the allegations made by the NDLEA against Senator Ashiru.

NDLEA had on Monday accused the Kwara South Senator of pursuing vendetta by making disparaging remarks about the agency on the floor of the Senate due to his inability to prevent the arrest and prosecution of his aides found engaging in drug abuse at the lawmaker’s personal residence in Ilorin, Kwara State.

The Senate panel, which is chaired by Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe (Abia South, APGA), has Senator Kaka Shehu (APC, Borno Central), Senator Ede Dafinone (APC, Delta Central), Senator Ireti Kingibe (LP, FCT), Senator Afolabi Shauibu (APC, Ogun Central), and Senator Lawal Usman (PDP, Kaduna Central), as members.

Ashiru had invoked Order 42 of the Senate Standing Order, to clarify how the backlash from his remarks during last week’s debate on an NDLEA Amendment Bill has impacted his integrity. He emphasised that he neither consume alcohol nor carbonated drinks, urging the Senate to treat the issue with utmost seriousness.
