The federal government, through the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, and other stakeholders have said that extreme poverty in Nigeria can only be addressed by a combination of policy and economic reforms, effective social protection initiatives and frameworks for social and economic empowerment of the poor.

The stakeholders made this known yesterday in Abuja at the 31st Annual Development Forum of the Lift Above Poverty Organisation (LAPO), with the theme “Paradox of Poverty in a Wealthy Nation: Policy Issues and Perspectives.”

The minister of state for Agriculture and Food Security, Sen. Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi, who was the special guest of honour at the forum, touched on agriculture’s pivotal role in economic development and poverty alleviation.

“Agriculture is a fundamental pillar of our economy, vital for alleviating poverty, fostering growth, and ensuring food security. Despite the sector’s vast potential, we still face the significant challenges of which the cooperative sector has a critical role to play in delivering growth.

“Our focus, therefore, is to change this paradox where inequality persists. Nigeria has fertile land, abundant natural resources, and a youthful population. Yet, many still struggle with poverty and food insecurity. To tackle these issues effectively, we need a comprehensive approach aligned with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Tinubu.

“The Renewed Hope Agenda aims to revitalize the economy, promote inclusive growth, enhance the quality of life, and bring prosperity to all Nigerians. It emphasises the need for agricultural innovation and infrastructure investment, which can significantly boost productivity and sustainability,” he said.

Abdullahi who was represented by the special assistant to the minister on Cooperative and Farmers Welfare,  Hon. Victor Oyegoke, stressed the importance of aligning agricultural innovation with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, by investing in smallholder farmers and enhancing market access.

The forum brought together political leaders, policymakers, and practitioners to confront the persistent issue of poverty amidst Nigeria’s wealth and shed light on the disconcerting juxtaposition of abundant resources and prevalent poverty in Nigeria.

Founder and CEO of LAPO, Godwin Ehigiamusoe, while delivering his address called for collective action to end the challenges of poverty in the county.

“The challenge of poverty is enormous. Extreme poverty can only be addressed through a combination of policy reforms, effective social protection initiatives, and frameworks for empowering the poor economically,” he said.

Ehigiamusoe highlighted LAPO’s three-decade commitment to alleviating poverty across Nigeria and Sierra Leone, through innovative financial products such as micro-insurance and micro-leasing.

“Millions of Nigerians have benefited from our programmes, and we remain dedicated to enhancing their quality of life.

“Together, we can chart a path toward sustainable development and lasting prosperity for Nigeria,” Ehigiamusoe said.

Chairman of the LAPO Board of Directors, Osaren Emokpae, expressed gratitude for the continued relevance of the forum.
