The Administrator of Zaria Metropolitan Authority, Hajiya Balaraba Aliyu Inuwa, has promised that competent waste disposal contractors will soon be engaged for the cleaning of refuse in Zaria and surrounding towns.

Hajiya Balaraba said that in the interim, the casual workers who have been recruited from the four local governments that constitute Zaria Metropolitan Authority, have been cleaning the major towns on a daily basis.

According to her, the refuse generated from this cleaning exercise are cleared everyday by compactors and tippers for proper incineration, adding that the evacuators are paid daily for services rendered.

Hajiya Balaraba explained that the Metropolitan Authority had to resort to this ad hoc arrangement because the contract of the person who was previously engaged for the cleaning exercise has ended and a new contractor is about to be engaged.

The Administrator said that Zaria and Sabon Gari local governments have been divided into seven lots to aid the incoming waste disposal contractors that will eventually be engaged.

She said that the procurement processes for engaging them have almost been concluded and by next week, the contractors will commence work.

The Administrator who advised the people of Zaria, Sabon Gari, Giwa and Soba local governments to desist from indiscriminate dumping of refuse in water ways, pointed out that such habits cause flooding.

Hajiya Balaraba further said that work has commenced on the five roads projects that the Metropolitan Authority had earlier awarded three months ago, adding that the contractor has promised to finish the project before the end of the Malam Nasir El-Rufai administration.
