Newly appointed minister of livestock development, Alhaji Idi Mukhtar Maiha, has committed to transforming Nigeria’s livestock sector by improving productivity and addressing the long-standing farmers-herders’ conflict.

At a press briefing in Abuja, Maiha outlined a vision of inclusivity and modernisation, emphasising the sector’s potential for economic growth and rural development.

While expressing gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his appointment, he highlighted the ministry’s mission to support Nigeria’s food security and agricultural advancement.

“Livestock is not just a sector; it is a way of life for millions of Nigerians. Our mission is to transform it into a sustainable, resilient, and inclusive ecosystem,” he said.

As an experienced livestock farmer, Maiha acknowledged the challenges in the sector, including feed shortages, disease outbreaks, farmer-herder conflicts, and climate change.

He expressed confidence that the issues could be tackled through collaboration and innovation.

“With the expertise within this ministry, we can unlock the true potential of the livestock sector,” he stated.

The minister added that his priorities include creating an environment conducive to investment, empowering both smallholder and large-scale farmers, and introducing climate-smart practices.

Maiha emphasised the need to develop Nigeria’s grazing reserves, enhance productivity, and encourage youth and women’s participation in the livestock value chain to generate employment and improve livelihoods.

He also outlined plans to adopt international best practices, improve animal health services, and strengthen market access, while underscoring the importance of preventing zoonotic diseases through partnerships with the stakeholders.

The ministry’s permanent secretary, Dr Chinyere Akujobi, welcomed Maiha’s leadership and described his appointment as a new dawn in Nigeria’s livestock industry.

She highlighted the ministry’s mission to enhance global competitiveness and economic resilience through strategic investments and policy development.

The Ministry of Livestock Development was established on July 9, 2024, as part of President Tinubu’s strategy to address key issues, including grazing reserve development, animal health, and public-private partnerships.

Dr. Akujobi expressed optimism that Maiha’s vision would help tackle the sector’s longstanding challenges.
