Old students of Garki Secondary School in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have said that fostering a sense of national pride is essential for the country’s development, especially in light of the ongoing issue of brain drain and the so-called ‘japa syndrome.’

The imperative of nurturing patriotism among the youth was emphasised during a recent reunion dinner held in Abuja by the alumni of Government Secondary School, Garki.

During the celebration of the 30th anniversary of the GSS Garki Class of 1994, the president of the alumni association, Festus Uduebor urged Nigerians to cultivate a strong sense of national pride to enable the country to compete effectively on a global stage.

“Patriotism is rooted in contentment. When individuals are satisfied with what they have, they are less likely to resort to dishonest means to achieve wealth.

“Nigeria is unparalleled; we are endowed with abundant resources. Unfortunately, a small group has held the country hostage, but I am optimistic that change is coming,” he said.

Uduebor called on citizens to contribute to the development of Nigeria, highlighting that a lack of commitment to national progress undermines the integrity of any nation.

To instil patriotism in the younger generation, he emphasised the role of educated individuals within the community.

“As a knowledgeable group, we will continue to engage with young people and provide meaningful interventions,” he stated.

He also encouraged the youth to remain focused and determined in their pursuits to make a positive impact on society.

“We have offered several scholarships to students from our alma mater, acknowledging the school’s crucial role in shaping our lives,” he said.

Chairman of the planning committee, Dr. Peter Olumuji, also addressed the reunion’s theme, “Building Patriotic Leaders for Tomorrow,” that belief in the nation is essential as the older generation prepares to pass the torch to the younger one.

“Having faith in your country is non-negotiable. Nigeria is still the only nation where citizens can freely express themselves,” he said.

Olumuji stressed the importance of fostering an environment that encourages youth to embrace and promote patriotism.

“We must avoid speaking negatively about our nation, as every country faces its own challenges,” he cautioned.

He concluded by reflecting on the positive transformations he has observed in Abuja, urging others to recognize and actively participate in the desired change. “If you wish to see the future you envision, it begins with you.”
