The Rivers State Marine Command of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has carried out a sensitisation exercise against irregular migration for the people of Onne Community in Eleme local government area of the state.
Onne Community is the host to the Federal Ocean Terminal (FOC) and Federal Lighter Terminal (FLT) and several multinational corporations, who are key players in the oil and gas sector.
The sensitisation exercise, which was held at the Onne Town Hall, was in line with the ongoing nationwide enlightenment campaign against irregular migration with the theme: “Say No To Migrants Smuggling”.
Speaking during the exercise, Comptroller of Immigration, Rivers Marine Command, Akinyemi Johnson Olusola, said the aim of the exercise was to enlighten the public on the crime and dangers associated with this unlawful adventure.
Olusola, who explained the dangers of irregular migration and the effects to individuals and families, also outlined the legitimate ways of migration if one must migrate.
In their separate presentations at the event, three resource persons, DCI AO Popoola, ACI Gift Ike and DSI Azubuike Chinaka, sensitised the audience on the need to guide against irregular migration and seek legitimate way of migration.
In his remarks, representative of the Onne traditional institution, Chief Williams Olaka, thanked the NIS Comptroller General, Kemi Nana Nandap, for the timely initiative.
Olaka, who promised to disseminate the information to all the youths and adults in the community, reiterated the commitment of the community in partnering with immigration service in the fight against irregular migration.
