The 49th Ikoyi Club 1938 Ladies’ Open Golf Tournament will highlight Africa’s growing golf talent as players from Nigeria, Zambia, Uganda, and the United States (US) converge in Lagos from November 13–15, 2024.

The prestigious tournament, sanctioned by the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews, will feature 120 amateur lady golfers, 17 professional lady golfers, and 100 male golfers under the theme “A Taste of Nigeria.”

Lady Captain Ikoyi Club 1938, Fatumata Coker, said the event would transcend golf by showcasing Nigeria’s culture through food, clothing, and entertainment.

“This event is not just a golf tournament; it’s an immersive cultural experience. We’re promoting golf, tourism, and Nigeria’s positive image,” Coker said.

“We are introducing several new elements, including inclusivity and charity programmes. Our lady professionals will participate for the first time, showcasing their skills across the first two days. We’ll also celebrate Nigerian culture through music, dressing, and food across all three days, introducing our international participants to what Nigeria has to offer,” she said.

Players with handicaps 0-28 will compete in strokeplay format, while those with handicaps 29-36 will play in Stableford format to ensure smooth gameplay.

The co-chairman Mrs Nkoli Moka revealed that the tournament, themed “Global Harmony Through Recreation,” would attract top golfers from across Africa.

“Golf is not just about rolling balls on the ground – it covers so much more. We come here for recreation and the camaraderie among ladies and men alike. It’s a lifestyle and very therapeutic, walking around nature and appreciating what it offers. That’s why people get addicted to this game; it has so many positive aspects,” Moka said.

The competition secretary Pat Ozoemene emphasised the tournament’s role in elevating Nigeria’s golfing status.

“We’re trying to showcase Africa and Nigeria. Ikoyi Club has always set high standards, and with different categories this year, we’re aiming to bring out the best,” Ozoemene said.

The winners stand to receive prestigious prizes, including a business class ticket to the USA courtesy of Delta Airlines, an experience in Marrakech, Morocco, and a stay at Lakowe Golf and Country Estate.

The event will support local caddies through training and scholarships, while the 17 Nigerian lady professionals will compete for a free round-trip ticket to the USA.

Previous winners of the tournament include Irene Nakalembe, Gloria Mbaguta, and Evelyn Oyome.

The festivities begin with a cocktail event on November 12, featuring displays of Nigeria’s rich cultural heritage through daily exhibitions of fabrics, crafts, and art from various regions.
