The President General of the United Nations Association of Africa (UNAA), Amb. Sylvester Okafor, has expressed grave concern regarding the alarming rise of terror groups in Nigeria, particularly the emergence of a new terrorist faction in Sokoto State, alongside escalating violence in various regions, including the South-East.
In a press statement from the United States, which he personally signed and made available to journalists in Abuja by the Director of Communications of the association, Amb. Nwokoma Messiah, on Tuesday, Amb. Okafor emphasised that the growing insecurity poses a significant threat not only to the safety and well-being of citizens but also to the realisation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Nigeria.
Recall that a new terror group known as the ‘Lakurawa’ has been terrorising the people of Sokoto and Kebbi States, killing innocent persons and destroying properties as well as preventing farmers from going to their farms.
The developments have prompted the President General of the UNAA to call on the federal government to take immediate and decisive action to combat the threats, asserting that the current security situation undermines efforts towards achieving economic stability, education, health, and peace – all critical components of the SDGs.
“The rise of these terror groups is a grave concern for all Nigerians. It is imperative that the federal government reassesses its strategies and allocates the necessary resources to address this burgeoning crisis,” Okafor stated.
“Insecurity hampers development, and if left unchecked, it will reverse the progress we’ve made towards our national and international commitments.”
Amb. Okafor urged the government to enhance collaboration with international partners and to invest in community-based initiatives that promote peace and security.
He highlighted the importance of engaging local leaders and communities in the fight against terrorism, stressing that sustainable solutions must involve the participation of those most affected by the violence.
He added that the UNAA stands ready to support the government and civil society in efforts to restore peace and stability across Nigeria, fostering an environment where development can thrive and the SDGs can be realised.
