Following the protest that greeted incessant power outage at the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, Oyo State, the management of the health institution said it has implemented alternative power sources.

The hospital’s Public Relations Officer, ‘Funmi Adetuyibi, said in a statement that management has provided backup generators and solar panels to critical areas such as emergency departments, operating theatres and intensive care units.

The University College Hospital had been struggling with electricity challenges following disconnection of the institution by the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC) over an outstanding bill of N392 million.

According to the statement, the power outage has significantly affected the hospital’s ability to provide effective healthcare services, affecting clinical, research, and training activities.

Adetuyibi explained that the hospital’s accumulated bill since 2019 stands at N3.1 billion with N2.9 billion already paid, leaving an outstanding balance of N392 million.

She added that management took these measures in order to mitigate the effects of the power outage on the hospital and its services.

In addition, Adetuyibi said the hospital has established a situation room to provide real-time solutions, ensure that emergency services remain operational, maintain patient care and treatment in critical areas, and to explore alternative energy provisions.

The hospital management apologised for the inconvenience caused, and assured patients and the public of their commitment to providing adequate and effective healthcare services.
