The Medical Rehabilitation Therapists (Registration) Board of Nigeria (MRTB) extended a prestigious invitation to Olufemi Akintunde to serve as a judge in its annual assessment of physiotherapy practices.

Renowned for his expertise and innovative contributions to the field, Olufemi was uniquely qualified to evaluate the competence and quality of physiotherapy services in Nigeria, a task critical to the MRTB’s mission of upholding excellence in medical rehabilitation.

The MRTB is responsible for ensuring the standardization of practices across medical rehabilitation professions, including physiotherapy. Each year, it convenes a panel of experts to assess practitioners, clinics, and training institutions, focusing on their adherence to professional standards, patient care quality, and innovation. Olufemi’s inclusion on the 2021 judging panel reflected not only his recognition as a leader in the field but also his deep commitment to advancing physiotherapy in Nigeria.

Olufemi’s groundbreaking work in areas such as community-led rehabilitation programs, tele-rehabilitation, and evidence-based practices made him an invaluable addition to the panel. His ability to balance clinical expertise with a forward-thinking approach enabled him to provide insightful evaluations of the physiotherapy practices under review.

Reflecting on his role as a judge, Olufemi stated: “It was an honor to be entrusted with this responsibility by the MRTB. Physiotherapy is evolving rapidly, and as a profession, we must ensure that our practices are not only evidence-based but also patient-centered and innovative. This process is essential for maintaining the integrity and progress of our field.”

During the assessment process, Olufemi collaborated with a diverse panel of seasoned experts, including representatives from academia, clinical practice, and policy-making bodies. The evaluations covered key areas such as:

* Competence of Practitioners: Reviewing the technical proficiency and knowledge of physiotherapists in various settings.

* Quality of Patient Care: Assessing how effectively physiotherapy clinics addressed patient needs and ensured safety and satisfaction.

* Innovation and Technology: Examining the integration of modern techniques and tools into everyday practice, a growing area of focus in the field.

One of the highlights of the process was the recognition of practices that excelled in these areas. Olufemi and the panel were particularly impressed by clinics that incorporated holistic care approaches and those that prioritized accessibility for underserved populations.

Olufemi’s participation also extended beyond evaluation. As part of his role, he contributed to strategic discussions on how to raise the overall standard of physiotherapy in Nigeria. His insights were instrumental in shaping recommendations for policy updates and training initiatives aimed at bridging gaps in service delivery and professional development.

The MRTB’s decision to include Olufemi on the judging panel underscored his standing as a thought leader in physiotherapy. Over the years, his contributions have not only advanced the profession but also inspired a generation of practitioners to embrace innovation and excellence.

By lending his expertise to this vital process, Olufemi Akintunde once again demonstrated his unwavering commitment to the growth and integrity of physiotherapy in Nigeria. His involvement with the MRTB in 2021 is a testament to his enduring impact on the profession and his vision for its future.
