The Nigeria Mining Cadastre Office (NMCO) has collaborated with the Department of State Service (DSS) to train members of its staff on cybercrime security.

A statement by NMCO’s head of press, Folasade Fatoke, said the training, held on Tuesday at the agency’s conference room, was in line with its commitment to its online service delivery and curbing cybercrimes associated with the internet.

The director general of NMCO, Engr. Obadiah Simon Nkom charged MCO staff members to adhere to “the Dos and Don’ts” of the DSS training, adding that cyber security is crucial for personal and organisational protection.

Stressing the need for the training, Nkom stated that MCO’s system was web-based after the launch of the electronic Mining Cadastre Plus (eMC+), and every user is expected to be vigilant about their interactions online.

He mainly explained the importance of the Agency’s online system migration, which he stated would promote efficiency and transparency in processing the application for Mineral Titles and boost investment in the mineral sector.

Nkom said, “I believe you all know that our eMC+ has been online since it was launched in November 2022, and we have received many online applications. As such, we need to be very careful and be able to identify the tricks we are being taught today.

“Everybody is prone to attack, and this training is part of our strategy for reforming the office and developing security alertness. We must, therefore, be committed to ensuring zero tolerance on cybercrimes.”

A  key highlight of the training is the Declaration of Oath of Secrecy and Oath of Allegiance undertaken by staff members to rededicate their loyalty and service delivery to the nation.

The DG further explained that the purpose of taking the Oath of Secrecy and Oath of Allegiance at the training was to emphasise service ethics, adding that staff must develop values such as loyalty, honesty, hard work, accountability, and integrity.

“You’re all expected to protect the government’s documents, and this is why we are taking you through this training,” he said.

According to the statement, the interactive training session covered protection against malware, phishing, and identity threats and the importance of securing documents.
