The Federal Government Academy, Suleja, has witnessed a momentous occasion as the alumni, led by the 2004 graduating set, unveiled a series of transformative projects valued at nearly N200 million to improve living conditions at the school.

The initiative, spearheaded by the 2004 set, began as a 20th-anniversary project but quickly grew into a comprehensive endeavour with support from the general alumni body.

Speaking at the event, Project Coordinator Moses Auu highlighted the deplorable state of the hostels during their initial visit in June, which spurred their commitment to addressing pressing issues such as electricity, water supply, and sanitation.

“We provided a 10 kVA solar unit to power the boreholes and ensure consistent water supply. Old metallic pipes were replaced with DPR pipes, and toilets were renovated to meet international standards,” Auu said.

The project also included painting all seven hostels, replacing roofs, ceilings, and wardrobes, and repairing septic tanks and gutters.

The principal of the Academy, Dr Asma’u Yakubu, commended the alumni for their selfless contributions, noting that the improvements have significantly enhanced the students’ well-being and created a more conducive learning environment.

“Your generosity will leave a lasting impact, exemplifying the values of this academy as a center of excellence and home for the gifted,” she said.

Dr Yakubu assured the alumni that measures would be put in place to preserve the newly commissioned facilities, including requiring students and parents to sign undertakings to ensure responsible use.

Adding to the significance of the ceremony, Hajia Binta Asma’u, the Director of Secondary Education at the Federal Ministry of Education, delivered a stirring speech on behalf of the Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Education.

“It is a profound joy to stand before you on this historic occasion to commission projects undertaken by the alumni of the Federal Government Academy,” she began.

Asma’u emphasized the critical role of alumni in advancing their alma mater and society while urging current students to embrace the culture of giving back.

“Since its inception, the Federal Government Academy has been a beacon of hope and innovation. Suleja Academy remains unique, not just in Nigeria but across West Africa, as a dedicated institution for nurturing talent and excellence. The alumni’s contributions today reflect the solid foundation laid here,” she stated.

Hajia Asma’u also called for a collective commitment from the government, alumni, staff, parents, and students to ensure the Academy continues to shine as a symbol of excellence.

Future phases of the project will focus on classroom renovations and academic support, with alumni urging the government to reinvigorate policies for the gifted programme to further the Academy’s legacy of excellence.

The event also included words of encouragement from alumni representatives, Dapo Adesina who inspired the current students to maintain a connection with their roots and uphold the tradition of giving back.

“This milestone underscores the enduring bond between the Academy and its alumni, whose collective efforts continue to transform the institution and inspire future generations.”
