The Nigeria Police Force, FCT Command said it will commence the enforcement of ban on tinted glasses and covering of number plate.

FCT Commissioner of Police, CP Olatunji Disu stated this while parading some suspects arrested for various crimes in the nation’s capital on Tuesday.

The police commissioner said 296 vehicles have been impounded for violations such as the use of tinted glasses, driving with only one plate number and the use of concealed or defaced number plates.

He also said police operatives have successfully foiled five ‘One Chance’ robbery operations and rescued three victims who were abducted by these criminal elements.

CP Disu noted that, “These achievements highlight the effectiveness of our proactive strategies and show the importance of public collaboration in ensuring the safety of all FCT residents.”

Recall that the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi issued the statement on Saturday in response to a query on social media, emphasising that there is a law prohibiting the use of tint on vehicles.

Adejobi clarified that while the police had suspended the enforcement of the ban, this was due to a pause in the issuance of tint permits.

According to him, “There is a ban on it. It’s even a legal matter because there is a law on it. The police only suspended the enforcement of the law because we had suspended the issuance of the tint permit.”

He further explained that the police may exercise discretion in certain cases, particularly to investigate whether a vehicle with tinted windows is being used for criminal activities.

He also noted that the practice had been widely abused in the past.

Speaking on some of the major arrests, the police commissioner said “On November 23, 2024, at approximately 1pm, operatives from the State Intelligence Department (SID) apprehended one Ibrahim Kabiru during routine patrol along Ahmadu Bello Way. Suspicious circumstances surrounding his parked vehicle prompted a search, revealing one Point-of-Sale (POS) machine, one knife, scissors, two mobile phones and female luggage suspected to be stolen.

“Upon interrogation, Kabiru failed to provide a satisfactory explanation for the items, raising concerns about his involvement in ‘One Chance’ robberies.

“He is in custody and will be charged to court upon conclusion of the investigation.”

Similarly, the CP said police operatives on November 28, 2024 at approximately 7pm, received a distress call reported an ongoing robbery along Idu Industrial Area Road.

“Police operatives from Karimo Division swiftly responded, arresting one Ikechukwu Ngerem at the scene and rescuing the victim, Doris Gabriel, a heavily pregnant woman.

“Preliminary investigations revealed that Doris had been abducted on her way home from Federal Medical Center, Jabi by a gang posing as commercial vehicle operators,” the CP narrated.
