The Healthcare Equipment and Allied Products Providers Association of Nigeria (HEPAN) has once again vowed to intensify its efforts in combating the spread of fake and substandard healthcare equipment in Nigeria’s market.

It said that the move was crucial for safeguarding the nation’s healthcare system, economy, and global reputation.

In a statement issued by HEPAN on Wednesday, its National President, Dr. Ifeanyi Nwankwo, condemned the widespread presence of the unwholesome products in the health sector, calling it “unacceptable” and harmful to individuals and the healthcare system as a whole.

He said that the counterfeit and substandard devices not only endanger lives but also damage the integrity of country’s healthcare infrastructure and tarnish its global standing.

“As the leading advocate for quality healthcare, HEPAN remains committed to transforming the medical landscape through the promotion of superior healthcare devices,” he said.

HEPAN, which has become a key player in advocating for quality healthcare delivery in Nigeria, was pushing for greater compliance with regulatory standards and ethical business practices among its members. The association works closely with regulatory bodies and other stakeholders to ensure that its members adhere to the highest standards of honesty and integrity.

The commitment to patient safety is reflected in the theme of HEPAN’s upcoming Annual Conference, “Prioritising Patient Safety in the Marketplace,” which will take place during its Annual General Meeting (AGM) in Abuja on December 6th and 7th. Prof. Ali Pate, Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, will attend as the Guest of Honour.

The event will also feature discussions led by prominent figures in the healthcare sector, including Dr. Ikechukwu C. Anyanwu, the Regional Vice President (North) of HEPAN, and Alhaji Mustapha Husein Falaki, the chairman of the conference. Prof. Saad Ahmad, Medical Director of the Federal Medical Centre, Abuja, will serve as the Guest Speaker. Key industry players such as Sen. Eze Njoku, Managing Director of Darlez Nigeria Ltd, and Clare Omatseye, Managing Director of JNC International Ltd, are also slated to speak on issues related to the theme.

In addition to its efforts to raise awareness, HEPAN also provides a platform for the identification, correspondence, and verification of importers, distributors, and suppliers of medical devices in Nigeria. Membership in the association, Nwankwo emphasised, enhances professional credibility and aligns businesses with HEPAN’s commitment to quality, safety, and regulatory compliance.
