As the world marks Human Rights Day, the Abuja municipal Chapter of the National Association of Seadogs(NAS), Pyrates Confraternity, has called on the Nigerian government to prioritize prison reforms, citing the deplorable conditions and human rights abuses in the country’s correctional facilities.

A statement issued by Chike Onyia,
Steerer, Sahara Deck to commemorate World Human Rights Day, emphasized the need for urgent reforms to address the systemic challenges plaguing Nigeria’s prison system.

“We recognize the progress made in advancing human rights globally. However, we also acknowledge the ongoing struggles and challenges with regards to prison overcrowding and dehumanization in Nigeria.

“As a result of this, the National Association of Seadogs, Sahara Deck is donating some equipment to empower inmates in learning skills that will make them useful and productive in the outside world.

“The issue of prison overcrowding in Nigeria has reached a critical level, further exacerbating human rights violations.

“The conditions in many correctional facilities are inhumane, with severe consequences for the well-being of inmates.”
