Council of Registered Builders of Nigeria (CORBON) has taken steps to engage state governments to enact and enforce planning laws to ensure adherence to building codes and standards in the country.
The chairman of the council, Samson Ameh Opaluwah, stated this at the 24th induction ceremony of about 329 new builders, held yesterday, in Abuja.

Opaluwah who said the housing Minister, Arc. Ahmed M Dangiwa, has, also, recently inaugurated the Registered Builders Disciplinary Tribunal to discipline any registered builder found to have engaged in unethical or unprofessional conduct, also lamented that the sector has witnessed disturbing trend of building collapses which often results in tragic loss of life and property damage and highlighted the need for urgent action by all stakeholders.

The chairman charged the inductees to uphold the values of their profession and strive for excellence adding that their actions and decisions will have a lasting impact on the nation and citizens.

In his charge, the guest speaker as well as the Commissioner of Physical Planning & Urban Development, Lagos State, Dr. Oluyinka Abiodun Olumide called on the inductees to uphold good moral standards and be upright in doing their jobs.

Olumide who lauded that they have never had a recorded case of a professional builder involved in building collapse, also urged the entrants to concentrate on excellence and ensure that they do thorough in-house review of designs given to them by consultants as well as advise any client against compromising standards.

“Don’t just work on a design given to you by a consultant, you have the right to check. Do in-house review of it. Guide them as a professional and ensure that the right items are brought to site”.

“Do not rush too much, the money will come, your focus should be on your integrity. You don’t need to compromise on standards. Your integrity as well as the overall integrity of the profession should be your priority. Money will come at the right time, integrity and a good name is key for you at this stage of your professional life”, he said.
