The call was made by different speakers at a sensitisation road walk organized in Jos, the Plateau State capital, to mark this year’s 16 Days of Activism against Gender Based Violence.

The road walk was to demonstrate the commitment of WOWICAN and UN Women in lending their voices for an end to gender-based violence in society.

The road walk which took off from the Secretariat Roundabout Flyover in Jos had the women passing through the TEKAN headquarters and to the State House of Assembly Complex.

The women carried placards with different inscriptions such as, “No tolerance for Gender-Based Violence”, “Promote Gender Equality”, “Say No To Harmful Gender-Based Stereotypes, Hold Perpetrators Accountable,” among others.

Speaking during the procession walk, the Plateau State chairperson of WOWICAN, Sarah Dalut explained that the walk was vital as it would sensitise the public, especially women, on their rights and how to halt the violence against them.

She said women’s cause is vital to be advanced because of their importance in the community and also the family as the bedrock of society.

Similarly, Reverend Caleb Dami of the COCIN headquarters commended WOWICAN for taking the bull by the horn to advance the cause for the betterment of the female folks, stressing that even the Bible is against gender-based violence.

Other speakers and representatives at the walk included the Christian Association of Nigeria, the Federation of Muslim Women Associations in Nigeria (FOMWAN), Human Rights Commission, National Council for Women Society, the immediate past chairperson of WOWICAN, Rhoda Jahota and other personalities and groups.
