The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), has donated communication gadgets such as radio transmitters, walkie-talkie and mast to the Rivers State Police Command, in an effort to enhance security in the state.

Commissioning the gadgets at Police Headquarters in Port Harcourt yesterday, NDDC managing director, Dr. Samuel Ogbuku, said the donation demonstrated the partnership between the commission and security agents in Niger Delta.

Ogbuku said, ” As an interventionist agency, we must support the security agency to ensure peace. When it comes to the end of the year, there is an increase in crime because of activities of criminal elements who want to meet up.

“Since September this year, we have not had any violent crime. We thank you for your sacrifice. When we are sleeping, you are out there keeping watch. This equipment is to enhance your performance in policing Rivers State.

“We intend to replicate it in the other states command in the Niger Delta region to ensure they are linked. We will also consider donating a safe city centre equipped with CCTV to the Police.

“We will also work towards improving mobility of the Police Command. We will not stop, we will continue to do our best. You are our host command. It is happening because of the relationship of the Inspector General of Police,IGP Kayode Egbetokun, with the commission.

“He sees that partnership is the only way the Force can benefit more. He is so passionate to ensure the police does better. We are going to support him because he has the vision of the President. Without communication no security. Security is going digital.”

In his welcome address, the commissioner of police in Rivers State, Mustapha Bala, lauded the immediate-past commissioner of police in the state, Olatunji Disu for initiating the process with the NDDC management.

Bala, who was represented by the deputy commissioner of police (DCP), Operations, Samuel Erale, said: “What we are doing is one of the things we were expecting NDDC to do for us. The event was an initiative of the immediate past Commissioner of Police, Rivers State CP Disu.

“I am aware he brought the idea to the MD of NDDC.I know the effort the present Commissioner of Police, CP Bala made to CEO of NDDC,” he said.
