Wife of Abia State governor, Priscilla Otti has said Christmas is a season of sharing, love and joy, stressing that children should be made the centrepiece of the celebration.

Mrs Otti stated this yesterday during the 2024 Children’s Special Christmas party at Government House, Umuahia, the state capital.

The first lady explained that as future leaders, children should be shown affection and kindness, describing them as the greatest treasure of parenthood.

“This season reminds us of the importance of creating a world where every child feels loved, cherished and protected.

“We will not tolerate acts of violence, abuse or exploitation of children. Child trafficking, abuse and molestation are heinous crimes that destroy young lives and future.

“Together, we must raise awareness, enforce the law and rid our state of such atrocities to ensure that every child grows up in a safe and nurturing environment,” she said.

She stressed that education is children’s fundamental right regardless of their background and urged parents to engage their children meaningfully and to lead by example.

The commissioner for Primary and Basic Education, Goodluck Ubochi, highlighted the governor’s prioritisation of children’s development through free basic education.

Earlier, the commissioner for Women Affairs, Maureen Agukwa, represented by the permanent secretary of the ministry, Ogechi Oguama, lauded the first lady for organising the event.

Some of the highpoints of the occasion were presentation of drama, dance, games, quiz competition and distribution of gifts by the first lady.
