Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has charged security agencies to prioritise the safety of residents during the festive season.

He gave the charge during the FCT Security Committee meeting in preparation for the upcoming holidays.

He emphasised the importance of ensuring a secure environment for residents to enjoy the end-of-year celebrations.

The minister said the meeting aimed to evaluate the preparedness of security agencies to safeguard the lives and property of citizens, asserting that residents should feel safe enough to sleep soundly at night.
“Criminals often look to exploit the festive period to disrupt our citizens’ peace. However, I trust that we are equipped to maintain security.
“While you have performed commendably in policing, we cannot grow complacent. Vigilance is key to preventing any opportunism,” he said.

FCT commissioner of police, Tunji Disu, affirmed the committee’s commitment to ensuring safety during and after the holiday season.

He announced that joint operations among security agencies would commence shortly and urged residents to remain calm in the face of increased security presence.

“We are ramping up efforts at all entry and exit points into the FCT and collaborating with neighbouring states to address any potential security threat in surrounding areas.

“The Nigeria Air Force will deploy helicopters for aerial surveillance, while the Army, Navy, NSCDC and Police are actively clearing any suspicious locations,” he said.

Disu assured that residents should expect to see enhanced patrols by joint security teams, which may be more visible than usual.

“These coordinated patrols are designed to foster peace and reassurance among the public,” he said.

The commissioner thanked the community members for their support and cooperation, and encouraged them to report any suspicious individual or activity to the relevant authorities.
