Former presidential aide Doyin Okupe has publicly apologised to the group chief executive officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC), Mele Kyari, over his earlier criticisms regarding management of the oil and gas sector in the country.

This apology comes in light of recent announcements regarding the operational status of the Port Harcourt and Warri refineries, which resumed operations after extensive rehabilitation efforts, among other developments in the sector.

Dr Okupe, in a message yesterday in Abuja to commemorate Kyari’s 60th birthday, expressed humility and admiration for the NNPC GCEO’s remarkable achievements in transforming Nigeria’s oil and gas sector.

Okupe admitted that, like many others, he was once a vocal critic of NNPC and its leadership.
He recalled that, during his tenure with former President Olusegun Obasanjo, he shared the belief that NNPC could not deliver tangible progress.

“I was dismissive of Kyari’s leadership and even laughed at the idea of NNPCL’s creation,” he said.
However, he noted that Kyari and his team have proved him wrong by delivering on key objectives.
Okupe highlighted the revival of refineries, revitalisation of critical infrastructure, and the implementation of strategic initiatives that have addressed long-standing challenges in the petroleum sector.

“Particularly commendable,” he said, “is the significant reduction in the price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) at the pumps. This achievement has eased some of the economic burdens on Nigerians and deserves widespread commendation.”

On the occasion of Kyari’s 60th birthday, Okupe offered heartfelt congratulations, describing the NNPCL GCEO as a visionary leader whose dedication has reshaped public perception and earned national respect.

“I pray that Almighty God blesses you with continued wisdom, strength, and success,” he said. “May your efforts further alleviate the challenges faced by Nigerians and contribute to the prosperity of our nation.”
The statement marks a significant shift in Okupe’s perspective, as he joins many others in celebrating Kyari’s achievements and leadership in one of Nigeria’s most critical sectors.
