Through strategic partnerships and innovative programmes, the ministry is focused on boosting production, ensuring food security, and unlocking the sector’s economic potential.

During a courtesy visit to the ministry, delegations from NIRSAL Plc, Dabareji Farms, and other stakeholders reaffirmed their commitment to advancing the livestock value chain.

During the engagement, the minister of Livestock Development, Alhaji Idi Mukhtar Maiha, highlighted the government’s determination to revamp the sector.

“Our focus is on improving the value chain, ensuring food security, and unlocking the immense economic potential of the livestock industry. Collaborative efforts with private sector players and financial institutions like NIRSAL Plc will enable us to build sustainable solutions for animal husbandry, disease control, and market access,” he stated.

The head of the NIRSAL Plc delegation, Saad Hamidu, described the establishment of a 1,500-capacity meat-processing factory in Abuja as a milestone in strengthening supply systems.

“This initiative bridges the missing link in the value chain, ensuring a sustainable supply chain and driving organic growth in livestock processing,” Hamidu said.

The ministry’s permanent secretary, Dr Chinyere Ijeoma Akujobi, emphasised the importance of robust disease control programs to meet export standards.

“Trade partners demand assurance that animals are sourced from disease-free zones. This calls for a proactive approach to disease control and the development of strong monitoring systems,” she said.

In addition, Dabareji Farms consultant Dr Celestine Ayok unveiled plans to rehabilitate grazing reserves and enhance pasture development.

“Rehabilitating dams and restoring grazing reserves are quick wins for the ministry. These efforts will ensure water availability, boost productivity, and support sustainable grazing systems,” Ayok noted.

The discussions also highlighted the role of youth training programmes, which equip them with skills to manage livestock operations through collaborations with private organisations and development partners.
