Edwin Clark University (ECU), Kiagbodo, Burutu local government area of Delta State, has been closed due to students’ protests.

The students who took to the streets on Monday protested against what they termed gross, inhumane treatment by the school management against them and affecting their academic lives.

The students, in their hundreds, trouped out with placards bearing inscriptions such as, “We are struggling and suffering for water, electricity, and others;” “They only hear the language of riot;” and “Enough is Enough.”

An aggrieved student, simply called John, said their grievances include incessant epileptic supply of potable water and electricity as well as the non-functionality of the health centre and others.

“We were exposed to avoidable hardships since. It was supposed to be peaceful but the students were provoked beyond endurance.

This is not the first time students have protested over lack of basic amenities for their wellbeing in the university.”

The riot which occasioned the destruction of many school properties, took place in the early hours of Monday, January 27, 2025, in the university campus.

Many offices and computer systems were torched, and at the time of this report’s filing, management had yet to speak on the issue.

Meanwhile, the vice chancellor, Prof. Samuel Wara, has asked every student to vacate the campus temporarily while the impasse is being handled.
