The Institute of Strategic and Development Communication (ISDEVCOM) at Nasarawa State University, Keffi, has partnered with the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) to address critical issues related to migration and human trafficking.
As part of this collaboration, the Director-General of NAPTIP, Binta L. Adamu Bello, will deliver a keynote address at the international conference, which begins on March 27 in Keffi.
This partnership follows a meeting held at NAPTIP‘s headquarters in Abuja between delegates from ISDEVCOM and officials from the agency.
“The meeting focused on establishing a collaborative framework for hosting the sixth edition of ISDEVCOM‘s international conference, themed “Japa: Communicating Migration and Africa‘s Development.‘
The ISDEVCOM team was led by Dr Azubuike Erinugha, a lecturer at the institute, and included the National President of the ISDEVCOM Scholars Alumni Association, Dr George Ndukwu; Chairperson of the Local Organizing Committee, Juliana Taiwo-Obalonye; Registrar of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR), Dr Uzoma Onyegbadue; Legal Adviser of the Alumni Association, Dr Ephraim Okon; Community Relations Officer, Mazi Achilleus-Chud Uchegbu; Head of the Marketing Committee, Ms Ekas Esosa; and Secretary of the LOC, Mr Henry Okowuru.
Dr. Erinugha, the delegation leader, expressed gratitude for NAPTIP‘s willingness to collaborate with the institute, stating that the ‚japa syndrome‘ was depriving Nigeria of its youth.
He commended NAPTIP for its efforts in combating human trafficking and illegal migration, emphasising that the agency‘s support for the ISDEVCOM conference would strengthen the synergy between academia and law enforcement in expanding the fight against these challenges.
“We are here today to explore how we can collaborate to raise awareness about migration issues affecting our communities. NAPTIP is a leading agency in this fight, and having your support at our conference will significantly amplify our message,“ he said.
Dr. Ndukwu underscored the significance of NAPTIP‘s involvement, stating, „This conference is not just an academic gathering; it is a platform for action. By partnering with NAPTIP, we can provide a comprehensive perspective on the challenges surrounding human trafficking and migration in Nigeria.“
In addition, Dr. Okon stressed the importance of inclusive dialogue: „Our goal is to create a robust discussion that engages all stakeholders. Featuring NAPTIP as a key partner ensures that the voices of those affected by trafficking are heard loud and clear.“
Chief Onyegbadue highlighted the global visibility the conference would provide NAPTIP, noting its well-established partnership with the NIPR, a strong member of the Global Alliance, the world body for public relations organisations.
Representing the Director-General, Barr. Hassan Tahir acknowledged the necessity of collaboration in combating human trafficking.
„NAPTIP has made substantial strides in addressing human trafficking in Nigeria,“ he said. „However, we recognise that partnerships are essential for expanding our reach and impact. This conference presents an invaluable opportunity for us to share our initiatives and educate the public about the realities of trafficking.“
Also speaking, NAPTIP’s Director of Legal and Prosecution, Barr. Ijeoma Amugo stated that the agency and ISDEVCOM would work together to develop policies that combat trafficking and provide support for victims.
„NAPTIP is committed to this cause, and we see this partnership as a vital step toward achieving our common goals,“ she added.
Other NAPTIP executives present at the meeting included the Director of Public Enlightenment, Dr Kehinde Akomolafe; Deputy Director of Legal and Prosecution, Mrs Becky Aderonke; Deputy Director of Research and Programme Development, Rasheed Olatunji; and Head of Press and Public Relations, Cynthia Obianuju Nnoli.
The meeting concluded with both parties committing to formalise their partnership through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). This MoU will outline collaborative efforts in research initiatives and public awareness campaigns to combat human trafficking.
The 6th International Conference on Communication and Development in Africa, which will be held physically and virtually, will attract scholars and experts in migration and communication studies from across the continent.
