The Kano State government has received a design document for implementing the Maternal and Neonatal Mortality Reduction Innovative Initiative (MAMII), which aims to reduce maternal and child mortality in the state.

Presenting the document to the state at the end of a five-day workshop in Kano, MAMII lead Dr Dayo Adeyanju said the design of the document was co-created by various stakeholders to a state-specific context to address issues around maternal and child mortality in the state.

He said the intervention was in response to a mandate from the coordinating minister of health to mobilize resources to address the issue across the country.

According to him, the document examines all thematic areas and what needs to be done at both the communities and facilities to create access physically and financially, stressing that, when implemented, it will end maternal mortality in the state.

While commending the state for its commitment to tackling the issue directly, he said the commitment is reflected in its adoption of the initiative’s plans and its public declaration of support.

The governance coordination and subnational engagement lead at the sectoral Wide Approach (SWAP), Coordination office, Federal Ministry of Health, Dr Ashiru Abubakar, said they have reviewed all the available evidence by visiting communities and have understood the major issues with experts from both Nigeria and abroad who looked at those challenges identified and proffer innovative solutions with a view to save the lives of mothers and children.
