In a proactive move to address the prevailing economic hardship and food scarcity, the Zango local government area of Katsina State has adopted an 11-month farming cycle.

The council chairman, Hon. Ahmed Babangida, disclosed this in an interview, emphasising that the initiative aligns with Governor Dikko Umaru Radda’s agricultural enhancement policies aimed at mitigating citizens’ economic difficulties.

According to Babangida, the local government has distributed over two million improved seedlings, solar water pumps, and fertilisers at a 35 per cent subsidised rate to encourage farming, adding that power tiller machines have been provided to enhance mechanised agriculture across the region.

Extension workers have been equipped with motorcycles and logistics support to ensure farmers adopt modern farming techniques. This allows them to guide and educate farmers on improved agricultural practices.
Beyond farming, the council has also introduced empowerment programs for women and youth, providing goats and N20,000 to support small-scale trade and livestock businesses.

The council has banned open grazing to enhance security and protect farmers, deploying three vehicles and ten motorcycles for security patrols. This move also aims to eliminate drug-related activities and other crimes in the area.

Furthermore, the council has prioritized education by engaging 100 teachers and providing them with stipends to support teaching students in local schools.

Hon. Babangida thanked Governor Radda for his support, particularly in establishing the Community Development Committee (CDC) and approving funds to accelerate rural development.

He reaffirmed the council’s commitment to supporting the governor’s vision to transform the state.

The initiative reflects a broader effort to strengthen food security, economic stability, and rural development in Katsina State.
