The slaughterhouses are in the Dawakin Tofa, Kunchi, Bichi, Gezawa, Tudun Wada, Kura, Rano, Bebeji, Wudil, and Doguwa local government areas. Others are located in Gabasawa, Gaya, Sumaila, Takai, Kabo, Shanono, Karaye, Kiru, and Gwarzo local government areas.

KSADP is a development initiative funded by Islamic Development, the Lives and Livelihood Funds, LLF, and the state government.

The state project coordinator, KSADP, Ibrahim Garba Muhammad, announced this yesterday during a stakeholders meeting at Global Luxury Suites in the metropolis to deliberate on strategies for efficient slaughterhouse management, sustainability, and alignment with public health standards.

The meeting was convened by the governor’s senior special assistant on Abattoirs, Sani Rabi’u Muhammad. It involved traditional heads of butchers, heads of Agricultural Departments from local governments, and other stakeholders since the projects have been completed and are waiting for commissioning.

“The objective of this intervention is to guarantee the safety of meat, monitor animal diseases and control the spread of zoonotic diseases that impact public health,” he stated.

The coordinator added, “As you are aware, the projects have been completed and should be used to avoid dilapidation or pilferage of the facilities provided.”

The senior special assistant to the governor on Abattoirs, Sani Rabi’u Muhammad, said the meeting was to map out strategies to effectively operationalise the slaughterhouses and prevent them from dilapidation and theft of vital facilities.

In his remarks, Sarkin Fawar Kano, Alh. Isyaku Alin Muri expressed appreciation to the government of Kano State, the Islamic Development, and The Lives and Livelihood Funds, LLF, for constructing the slaughterhouses, which he described as a major landmark in meat processing in Kano.

Contributing, the managing director of Kano State Agricultural and Rural Development Authority, KNARDA, Dr Farouk Ahmad Kurawa, emphasised the need for butchers in the state to embrace best global practices in conducting their business for speedy progress.

Meanwhile, the meeting resolved to immediately commence operation of the slaughterhouses, while the KSADP and the state government would work towards addressing issues of minor repairs and replacement of vandalised facilities. It also agreed to set up operational management committees for the projects, while the heads of agriculture departments at the respective local governments were mandated to work with stakeholders to make the set goals achievable.
